Advanced Certification Swallowing Therapy

Provider Spotlight: Erin Kennedy Earns Advanced Certification in Swallowing Therapy

Cook Hospital is proud to share that speech-language pathologist Erin Kennedy has earned her MDTP (McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program) certification, bringing advanced, evidence-based swallowing therapy to our community.

Erin pursued this certification to offer a more exercise-science-based approach to swallowing therapy. Rather than focusing only on compensatory strategies, MDTP emphasizes structured, progressive exercises designed to improve swallowing function.

“It’s similar to how physical therapy builds strength and function over time,” she explains.

Study and testing outside of work

Achieving new certifications as a working provider can be challenging, eating into personal hours outside of work.

For Kennedy, the certification process included an intensive 11-hour live course, followed by several weeks of independent study and a comprehensive certification exam.

“This specialized training is especially impactful for patients in our area,” she shares. “Because swallowing therapy has not previously been available locally, many individuals have been managing chronic swallowing difficulties for years. MDTP is designed with these patients in mind and may also benefit those who have not experienced success with previous swallowing therapy.”

Addressing the Root Cause

One of the most exciting aspects of the program, according to Erin, is its emphasis on addressing the root cause of swallowing challenges.

“It moves beyond simply working around the problem,” she explains, “and instead uses a structured, exercise-based program designed to actually improve function.”

With this new certification, Cook Hospital & Care Center is expanding access to specialized swallowing care—helping patients improve safety, confidence, and quality of life closer to home.
